Category

Afternoon Creative Challenge: Embroidery Machine Operation and Local Elements Creation Workshop

After a short test to review their morning progress, participants moved on to operating the Brother PR680W commercial embroidery machine. Instructors demonstrated essential skills—threading, hoop setup, and machine configuration. With its six-thread capability, up to 1,000 stitches per minute, a generous 200 × 300 mm embroidery area, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen, the PR680W offered students a near-industry-standard experience.

Brother has always been committed to promoting innovative design education through close collaboration with various institutions to nurture the next generation of design talent! This time, we partnered with the Fashion Design Department of Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) to deliver an immersive PE-Design 11 training workshop for students. From software mastery to hands-on machine experience, participants elevated their digital embroidery skills while infusing each piece with Hong Kong’s vibrant local culture. Let’s revisit this inspiring journey of creativity and learning!

PE-Design 11: Professional Digital Embroidery Design Tool

Brother PE-Design 11 is a powerful personal embroidery design software with built-in fonts, embroidery patterns, and embroidery techniques that can convert any image into embroidery patterns. Its stitch-preview feature allows real-time visualization of the finished design—drastically reducing trial-and-error time.

One-Day Training: Perfect Integration of Theory and Practice

Morning Session: PE-Design 11 Software Training

Under the guidance of Brother’s expert instructors, students began with the fundamentals: creating new projects, importing and editing images, selecting stitch types, and fine-tuning parameters. Special emphasis was placed on digitization workflows, teaching students how to transform hand-drawn motifs into embroidable digital files.

Hands-On Training Session

Immediately after theory, students dived into creating their own embroidery designs in PE-Design 11. Instructors provided one-on-one coaching to troubleshoot technical issues while encouraging peer discussion to deepen understanding of the software’s capabilities.

Creative Interpretation of Hong Kong Local Elements

The workshop’s highlight was a tote-bag embroidery challenge. Students used their newly acquired PE-Design 11 skills to craft 5 × 5 cm pieces inspired by Hong Kong’s local flair. Designs ranged from neon sign–inspired motifs and iconic street-sign typography to tea-café favourites like lemon tea, French toast, and bubble tea. “Turning Hong Kong’s elements into beautiful embroidery was so rewarding!” one student exclaimed. Each piece reflected deep cultural appreciation and a passion for the art of embroidery, showcasing the seamless blend of technology and creativity.

STEAM × Embroidery: A New Educational Model

Brother’s collaboration with HKDI goes beyond skill training—it equips students with cutting-edge design tools and real-world practice. By integrating embroidery solutions into STEAM education, digital embroidery becomes a cross-disciplinary learning tool that merges mathematical calculations, material science, engineering design thinking, and artistic aesthetics. This approach bridges theory and practice in secondary curricula, empowering students with diverse skills for their future careers.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Digital Embroidery Education

As digital technology evolves, embroidery art stands at an exciting crossroads. The powerful synergy of PE-Design 11 and the PR680W fuses traditional craftsmanship with modern design. Brother will continue partnering with local education institutions to nurture the next generation of creative talent, ensuring Hong Kong’s design education remains vibrant and forward-looking.
